Summer Opportunities for Professional Teachers

PART-TIME COACHING

If you are a teacher with two or more years of professional experience, we invite you to apply to serve as a part-time coach. You will coach five undergraduate and high-school teaching fellows in one content area: engineering, fitness, math, reading, social studies, or speech & debate. You will:

  • Observe your five fellows every day
  • Provide individual feedback in growth conferences
  • Lead lesson rehearsals for one department
  • Support five teaching fellows in differentiating lesson plans
  • Lead student work analysis
  • Mentor your teaching fellows as developing professionals

The part-time Teacher Coach role is 5 days/week for 6 or 7 weeks; the hours are 8:45 a.m. - noon or 12:45 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. You can choose whether to work mornings or afternoons. We will provide two days of pre-summer training and ongoing training, support, and development.

FULL-TIME COACHING

If you are a teacher with three or more years of professional experience who is interested in coaching and developing administrative experience, we invite you to apply to serve as a full-time coach. Full-time coaches coach two academic departments (two STEM departments or two humanities departments) and serve as members of the GT Leadership Team. You will:

  • Observe five fellows in one department every morning and five fellows in another department every afternoon
  • Provide individual feedback in growth conferences
  • Lead lesson rehearsals for both departments
  • Support 10 teaching fellows in differentiating lesson plans
  • Lead student work analysis in two departments
  • Mentor 10 teaching fellows as developing professionals
  • Support teaching fellows in leading engaging enrichment activities they design
  • Support program-wide transitions and rituals to build community and culture.

Full-time coaches are called "Deans of STEM" or "Deans of Humanities." The role is 5 days/week for 6 or 7 weeks for 10 hours/day. We will provide two days of pre-summer training and ongoing training, support, and development.

You've worked hard to become the teacher your students deserve. Are you ready to share your practice with someone else who aspires to do the same?

If you love collaborating, learning, and helping others grow, consider coaching this summer. You will mentor, guide, and advise Teaching Fellows — college and college-bound students considering becoming teachers. You will observe fellows and provide daily feedback and support. You’ll return to your classroom energized to implement your learning.

Part-Time Teacher Coach - Morning

8:45 a.m.    Greet students and Teaching Fellows at close of breakfast

8:50 a.m.    Lead lesson rehearsal with department

9:40 a.m.    Observe Teaching Fellows delivering the lesson you rehearsed together

10:30 a.m.  Conference individually with each Teaching Fellow to provide and practice actionable feedback

11:20 a.m.  Check in with fellow coaches 

12:00 p.m.  Conclude exciting morning of developing future teachers

12:45 p.m.    Greet students and Teaching Fellows at close of breakfast

1:00 p.m.    Lead lesson rehearsal with department

1:40 p.m.    Observe Teaching Fellows delivering the lesson you rehearsed together

2:30 p.m.  Conference individually with each Teaching Fellow to provide and practice actionable feedback

3:20 p.m.  Check in with fellow coaches 

4:00 p.m.  Conclude exciting afternoon of developing future teachers

Full-Time Coach: Dean of STEM or Dean of Humanities

7:30 a.m.    Check in with leadership team

8:00 a.m.    Greet Teaching Fellows and participate in Morning Huddle

8:30 a.m.    Greet students at breakfast

8:50 a.m.    Lead lesson rehearsal with math or reading department

9:40 a.m.    Observe Teaching Fellows delivering the math or reading lesson you rehearsed together

10:30 a.m.  Conference individually with each math or reading Teaching Fellow to provide and practice actionable feedback

11:20 a.m.  Check in with fellow coaches 

12:10 p.m.  Supervise recess and lunch, providing feedback to Teaching Fellows about supervision and management

1:00 p.m.    Lead lesson rehearsal with engineering or social studies department

1:50 p.m.   Observe Teaching Fellows delivering the engineering or social studies lesson you rehearsed together

2:40 p.m.   Conference individually with each engineering or social studies Teaching Fellow to practice actionable feedback

3:30 p.m.  Participate in Community Meeting

4:00 p.m.   Support end-of-day routines

4:15 p.m.   Participate in staff meeting

5:30 p.m.   Conclude another successful day developing future teachers

COACHING EXPERIENCE

How many Teaching Fellows will I coach?

Full-time Coaches (Deans) coach 10 Teaching Fellows with common prep periods; part-time Teacher Coaches coach 5 Teaching Fellows with common prep periods. 

What training will I receive?

We provide pre-summer training and two days of in-person training.

What curricula will I use?

We have customized unit and daily lesson plans for all content areas. We will provide curricula to you in advance, so you can learn it before the summer. 

    APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS

    What are the steps in the selection process?

    You will submit an online application with your resume, content preferences, video of your classroom teaching, and recommendation from a supervisor. We will invite top candidates to a Skype interview and will role play a coaching scenario. The entire process will be completed within four weeks. Members of the GT team will send automated and personal updates from different email addresses; be sure to check your spam so you don't miss an interview invitation or offer letter. 

    What is the ideal applicant profile?

    Ideal coaching applicants have at least two years of full-time teaching experience, while deans have at least three years of full-time teaching experience. All candidates must have a passion for the profession and a desire to lead within and beyond the classroom. We encourage coaches to return for multiple summers and to assume additional leadership positions in the future.

    • Denver coaches and deans must be employees of Denver Public Schools or Denver charter schools.
    • Providence coaches and deans must be employees of Providence Public Schools Department.
    • Western MA coaches and deans must be employees of Teach Western MA partner schools

    Do I need to be certified?

    Certification is not required.

    Is this a paid opportunity?

    Yes! Payment is differentiated by local cost of living and length of the commitment. Returning Teacher Coaches receive a $100 bonus; Returning Deans receive a $200 bonus.

    • Boston (6 weeks): Deans: $5,400; Teacher Coaches: $1,800
    • Denver (7 weeks): Deans: $6,300; Teacher Coaches: $2,100
    • Providence (7 weeks): Deans: $6,300; Teacher Coaches: $2,100
    • Western MA (7 weeks): Deans: $6,300; Teacher Coaches: $2,100

    What are my hours?

    The opportunities are flexible to provide an exciting leadership opportunity for teachers who need rejuvenation and inspiration during the summer.

    • Part-Time Teacher Coach: 8:45 a.m. - noon or 12:45 - 4 p.m., Monday - Friday
    • Full-Time Teacher Coach (Dean): 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday - Friday
