Why have you decided to teach?

YSABEL: I am a first generation college student. When I arrived to college it was not long before I realized that not many students like me have the opportunity of pursuing a higher education. I decided to teach because I want to do for others what my teachers had done for me- I want to help other students like myself have the opportunity to pursue a higher education. Teaching is how I disrupt injustice.

Why did you choose Brooke Charter schools? What support will you receive as a first-year teacher?

I chose this program because of all the professional development I will receive my first year as a teacher. My first year as a teacher I will be mentored and provided with feedback by an experienced teacher. When I decided I wanted to teach I also decided that I would only do so if I knew that I would become an effective teacher; with this program I am confident that I will be working towards that goal every day.

What subject(s) and grade level(s) will you teach?

YSABEL: Middle school English and Social Studies.

What are you most excited about?

YSABEL: I am excited to be around students and to grow as a professional and as an individual.

What did you learn during the interview process?

YSABEL: I learned that being myself is more than enough. While preparation is always key to feeling ready to be the best you can be at anything that you are doing, it is also important to just show who you are.

Do you have any advice for your TF colleagues?

YSABEL: Do what is best for you. Regardless of where you end up, even if it is not teaching, make sure that your choices reflect your values and what is important to you.

What is your favorite memory from the summer?

YSABEL: I really value my summer experience with GT. I learned something new every single day. My favorite memory is our trip to the zoo.
