ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Jose Martinez
Why have you decided to teach?
While in high school, my greatest support system were my teachers. They understood the challenges I was facing and helped me tackle them. Due to the support and encouragement of many of my teachers, I decided to do the same. I want to impact students just like teachers did for me.
What subject(s) and grade level(s) do you teach?
I teach a Student Leadership class at Dr. Martin Luther King High School. I am also the Family & Community Liaison for the school.
This summer, I will be the Dean of Operations at the new GT STEAM Academy site in Denver.
What did you learn from the job process? Were you asked to submit performance tasks, teach demo lessons, or answer unexpected questions?
In interviews, the question that always makes me think is, "how are you prepared to grow? What growth do you want to see happen?" I always have an answer, which makes me seem like a better prepared candidate.
I also always look for a great support system in a job.
Do you have any advice for your Teaching Fellow colleagues?
Don’t be afraid of a challenge. This job is challenging but, with the support of your peers and director, you will find it rewarding in the end.
What is happening in your life beyond your exciting current role?
I’m looking forward to becoming a resident of this country and soon a citizen. As an immigrant student and worker, I truly value all the opportunity this country has to offer and I intend to take full advantage.
What is your favorite memory from GT?
My favorite memory at GTSA was always connecting with students. I always looked forward to finding things we have in common.
Are you willing to be contacted by GT fellows and alumni who are considering your program?
Of course! My email is firstname.lastname@example.org. I can be found on social media as well.
