“The belief that no kids are 'bad apples,' and that each child has the capacity for greatness, struck me about GT. To see it here, before the academy even started, really inspired me. I’ll admit that, on the first day, I felt a little bogged down by students who really didn’t want to be there, and part of me wanted to believe that they would stay that way, that I would have to try to change their minds for five weeks. I had assumptions that middle schoolers were lazy, but I realized through actual teaching that nothing is permanent, and these stereotypes aren’t true. Providing each student with attention and care, and creating a positive classroom environment can smash these stereotypes.”
